A native of Chicago, Illinois Commander Betton enlisted in the Navy as a Seaman Recruit. He advanced through the enlisted ranks to Quartermaster Second Class in USS Chilton (APA 38).
Commander Betton was commissioned as an Ensign in June 1982 and served on USS Bronstein (FF-1037), USS Ocallahan (FF-1051), USS Cayuga (LST 1186), and
MV Cpl Louis J. Hague Jr.
Commander Betton’s shore assignments include Commanding Officer, Armed Forces Reserve Center Stockton, CA; Training and Readiness Officer, Navy Reserve Readiness Command Region NINTEEN, San Diego, CA; Executive Officer, Ashore Mobile Contingency Communications Unit FIVE, Denver, CO; Wach Captain, Joint Operations and Intelligence Center, United States Southern Command, Quarry Heights, Panama; Operations Officer, Military Sealift Command Expeditionary Unit 108, Miami, FL; Commanding Officer, Commander Southern Atlanta Force Unit 108, Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico; Branch Chief, Navy Test and Evaluation, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Pentagon; Rear Area Plans Branch Chief, United States Forces Korea.
His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal.
Commander Betton currently serves his country as a government employee with United States Southern Command’s Resource and Assessments Directorate and was awarded the 2008 Federal Employee of the Year Service to the Community award.
Commander Betton is an extreme adventure motorcyclist and has completed several International Iron Butt (IBA) rides. His latest charity ride conduct in July 2008 was a round-trip from Key West, FL to the Arctic Ocean and back to Key West, FL in only 22 days.
Commander Betton is the proud father of two children Andrea and Lacy.
